Notarisation and Apostille for Switzerland

The Swiss Confederation, Switzerland for short, is a landlocked country in central, southern and western Europe. It is a federal republic consisting of 26 cantons each with its own government, legislature, constitution, and judicial system. The capital city of Switzerland is Zurich. The cantons are Aargau, Appenzell Ausserhoden, Appenzell Innerhoden, Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft, Bern, Fribourg, Geneva, Glarus, Graubünden, Jura, Lucerne, Neuchatel, Nidwalden, Obwalden, Schaffhausen, Schwyz, Solothurn, St. Gallen, Thurgau, Ticino, Uri, Wallis, Vaud, Zug and Zurich.

The official language of each canton can vary between French, German, Italian and Romansh.

Documents issued in the United Kingdom to be used in Switzerland will need to be notarised and/or apostilled in order to be valid in Switzerland.

Switzerland was a founding signatory to the Convention of 5 October 1961 Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents. It entered into force on 11 March 1973, and means that any document that has been apostilled will be accepted in Switzerland. Legalisation by the Embassy of Switzerland in the United Kingdom is not required.
